Korean music continues to be one of the best in its field

By: Samantha Bennett

At a Korean music school, one of the most important things that you will see presented is an analysis of the Korean preservation system of music, with a focus on music-based traditions known as Intangible Cultural Properties. Due to its longevity and to its roots strongly attached to the spirit of Korean people, Kpop music is music worth every effort of preservation. In fact, we should all look at an overview of this preservation system and initiate some moves that would encourage other countries also to establish similar systems.

In order to be able to form an opinion about Korea’s music system, you should study specific folk art genres and different criteria in order to determine its truly unique and veritable authenticity. One of the most valued components of Kpop music is the oral folksong, enriched with a wonderful melodic line of amazing expressivity.

Musical instruments that come from Korea are numerous. The Korean people, equipped with excellent cultural heritage, have created in time different kinds of musical instruments. Traditional Korean musical instruments comprise a wide range of string, wind, and percussion instruments, all defined by the same touch of singularity and the wonderful quality of being able to induce a specific relaxation mood that only Korean music can induce.

One can divide traditional Korean music into at least four types: courtly, aristocratic, scholarly, and religious. Korean music has at its foundation Buddhist and native shamanistic beliefs – that can be encountered in the county called Chindo, a cultural tourism zone where you can actually still find shaman rituals frequently met and done with an impressive regularity. Buddhist and shamanistic dancing, and shamanistic drum music, are in their unique form, extant, as is a melodic, jazzy dance music called sinawi. Traditional Korean music includes both the court music and folk styles of the Korean people.

An interesting fact concerning Kpop music is that recently has been put into work the development of a music group having as purpose psychotherapy intervention for the primary prevention of adjustment difficulties that are so frequently encountered with Korean adolescent girls.

A number of thirty-five adolescent girls took part in a six-session school-based music group of psychotherapy intervention created with the precise and unique purpose of improving self-control skills and promoting human interactions. This has materialized into finding out that, indeed, several benefits can serve as protective factors for building the shield that they need in order to continue their emotional and social development.
